Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN)?
A LLEN is a community-based organisation that works to improve education, training, and employment pathways for young people. We connect schools, industry, community groups, and government to create opportunities that help students make informed choices about their futures.

What is the role of a LLEN?
Our role is to act as a connector and facilitator. We don’t deliver training or run programs directly, instead, we bring together schools, employers, and community partners to coordinate opportunities such as work experience, industry tours, career events, and mentoring. We make it easier for schools and businesses to collaborate by reducing barriers and supporting strong, practical partnerships.

For Schools

How can schools work with the LLEN?
Schools can connect with us to access:

  • Industry partnerships that provide work-based learning (e.g. work experience, structured workplace learning, school-based apprenticeships/traineeship connections.

  • Career expos, industry tours, and guest speaker opportunities.

  • Advice on aligning curriculum with local industry needs.

  • Support in engaging families and communities in pathway planning.

Do schools need to organise everything themselves?
No. Our role is to coordinate and broker opportunities with industry partners. We can help schools identify suitable opportunities, link them with employers, and provide guidance on how to prepare students for workplace learning.

For Industry & Employers

Why should my business get involved with the LLEN?
By working with us, businesses can:

  • Support the next generation of workers and showcase career pathways in their industry.

  • Build stronger links with schools and the community.

  • Address skill shortages by engaging with young people early.

  • Contribute to the local economy and workforce development.

What types of opportunities can employers offer?
Employers can get involved in many ways, such as:

  • Providing short-term work placements or work experience.

  • Hosting workplace tours for classes or year groups.

  • Speaking at schools or career events.

  • Offering mentoring or mock interviews.

  • Supporting school-based apprenticeships or traineeships.

How much time and effort is required from businesses?
It depends on the level of involvement you choose. Some employers offer a single site tour each year, while others host ongoing placements which start at just five days. The LLEN team will work with you to find an option that fits your capacity and ensures students are well-prepared before they arrive.

General Involvement

Who do I contact if I want to get involved?
You can reach out directly to the LLEN office. We’ll meet with you to understand your goals and capacity, and then match you with suitable opportunities.

Do LLENs provide direct services to students?
Not directly. We work through schools and partner organisations to ensure students receive consistent and coordinated opportunities.

How do LLENs decide what industries to focus on?
We work closely with local employers, government, and community partners to identify growth areas and skills shortages in our region. This helps us prioritise industries where young people can find sustainable career pathways.
