What Is A School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT)?

An SBAT is defined as a full time program that integrates education, training and employment as indicated below:
•    VCAL or VCE studies selected by the student
•    VCAL or VCE credit for the vocational training component of the  Apprenticeship or Traineeship
•    A negotiated training plan that has been signed and endorsed by the student’s school
•    Paid employment with the terms and conditions covered by appropriate industrial arrangements
•    SBATs offer students (typically Years 10-12, or VCAL Year 11 to 12) the opportunity to study at school whilst at the same time undertaking government approved and accredited training qualifications as paid employees.
•    For a young person undertaking an Apprenticeship in a school this involves them:
•    being enrolled as a student under the relevant Education Act;
•    undertaking a Training Program and being a signatory to a Training Agreement;
•    being employed in productive work for a minimum of 10 hours per week in a 3 year program or 15 hours per week in a 2 year program including training;
•    aiming for a national VET qualification;
