OELLEN - Australian School Based Apprenticeships

apprenticeWhat Is A School-Based Traineeship/Apprenticeship?

An ASBA is defined as a full time program that integrates education, training and employment as indicated below:

  • VCAL or VCE studies selected by the student
  • VCAL or VCE credit for the vocational training component of the New Apprenticeship
  • A training contract registered with the Office of Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE)
  • A negotiated training plan that has been signed and endorsed by the students school
  • Paid employment with the terms and conditions covered by appropriate industrial arrangements
  • ASBAs offer students (typically Years 10-12, or VCAL Year 11 to 12) the opportunity to study at school whilst at the same time undertaking government approved and accredited training qualifications as paid employees.

For a young person undertaking a New Apprenticeship in a school this involves them:

  • being enrolled as a student under the relevant Education Act;
  • undertaking a Training Program and being a signatory to a Training Agreement;
  • being employed in productive work for a minimum of 10 hours per week in a 3 year program or 15 hours per week in a 2 year program including training;
  • aiming for a national VET qualification;
