OELLEN - Australian School Based Apprenticeships
What Is A School-Based Traineeship/Apprenticeship?
An ASBA is defined as a full time program that integrates education, training and employment as indicated below:
- VCAL or VCE studies selected by the student
- VCAL or VCE credit for the vocational training component of the New Apprenticeship
- A training contract registered with the Office of Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE)
- A negotiated training plan that has been signed and endorsed by the students school
- Paid employment with the terms and conditions covered by appropriate industrial arrangements
- ASBAs offer students (typically Years 10-12, or VCAL Year 11 to 12) the opportunity to study at school whilst at the same time undertaking government approved and accredited training qualifications as paid employees.
For a young person undertaking a New Apprenticeship in a school this involves them:
- being enrolled as a student under the relevant Education Act;
- undertaking a Training Program and being a signatory to a Training Agreement;
- being employed in productive work for a minimum of 10 hours per week in a 3 year program or 15 hours per week in a 2 year program including training;
- aiming for a national VET qualification;
