Project Date Aims/Outcomes
Eastern Girls in Trades The project involves four schools: two from the OELLEN area ( Fairhills High School and Mater Christi College ) and two other schools from the Gateway LLEN. Each school is to provide 6-10 female students, who will be transported to various locations (under staff supervision) to meet and interview a range of females working in non-traditional industries such as automotive, engineering, transport & logistics. The students are to then present their findings using a range of media: photographic, audio visual or web-based. The purpose of the project is to raise awareness of the range of work options available to females, not simply amongst the students involved in the project, but their audiences as well.

Girls Get a Life

This research project has been developed under the Department of Education, Science and Training Scholarships for Careers Advisors Program. The OELLEN has hosted Marian Schnuriger, Careers Manager at Fairhills High School, and facilitated her work interviewing a number of female trainees and apprentices. Other interviews have been carried out with a Field Officer from Melbourne East Group Training Company, as well as with young women who have developed careers following on from the their traineeships.

The results of these interviews have been mounted on the OELLEN website under the Get A Life link. It is intended that this section of the website will grow next year as more young female trainees and apprentices are interviewed and their stories recorded.

An information session on Apprenticeships and Traineeships for Girls was run in September and well attended by a variety of schools. Speakers included a young Office Administration trainee working for the Public Records Office, as well as Field Officers from Melbourne East Group Training and AFL Sportsready.

An additional CD resource for Careers Advisors has been circulated to schools alerting them to the content of the website and for their use in school careers programs.

The project was developed due to the concern raised by many careers advisors in the Outer Eastern area about the number of young women that complete parts, or all, of their VCE/ VCAL certificates but who do not go on with education and training after they leave school.

The key aim of this project is to raise girls awareness of their range of options. It is hoped that they will realise the advantages to be gained when they combine certified training with workplace experience.

Positive Pathways Forum

Outer Eastern LLEN hosted a free evening forum for parents of young people with disabilities on 20th October at Swinburne Conference Centre, Croydon.
The World Cafe format was found by parents to be very friendly and informative. On registration parents were asked to select 3 topics of interest and were given 20 minutes at each table to present their child's specific needs.

forum

Parents and service agencies alike were able to share knowledge that will better support these young people requiring additional supports on leaving school. The importance of linking parents, schools and the young people prior to leaving the school was clearly evident by the conversations around the tables.
Selected professionals who specialise in disability support services included Centrelink, Department of Human Services - Futures for Young Adults, ECHO and EACH - Disability Employment Networks, Homesglen, Box Hill and Swinburne TAFEâ™s, Nadrasca Business Services, Deakin University - Tertiary Studies Pathways and MEGT - Disabled New Apprentice Wage Supports. . Comments like âœthe forum gave me a better understanding of what is availableâ and âœit provided contact points to discuss fundingâ has confirmed the need to host another forum during Term 2 in 2009.
